Description

Adult Catechism Series:“I wish I knew more about my faith”

We are continuing our Catholic Catechism series and Fr. Bill will help us look at our Catholic faith and what it means for us. We will also have time for discussion and questions/answers.

You can join us for one or all or whichever session interests you. Click here for a detailed flyer.

□ Session 1: How do I start reading the Bible?—Thursday, September 29th—6:30-8:00 p.m. Catechism Chapter 3: A lot of people would like to become more familiar with the Bible’s characters, stories and message. That’s a worthy ambition, but where do you begin? Many would-be readers are paralyzed by the sheer size of the Bible and by not knowing where to start. This session will give you some helpful tips on how you can make reading and studying the Bible part of your daily prayer and spiritual reflection.

□ Session 2: Why is the Church important to me?—Thursday, October 13th—6:30-8:00 p.m. Catechism Chapters 10 & 11: God created the world for communion with divine life, and the Church is that community founded by Jesus Christ through which we grow in communion with God and with one another. God calls us and forms us into a community of love, sharing faith in Christ Jesus in the common hope of eternal salvation. Learn how the parish is valuable for your growth in faith. We will discuss the sources of spiritual strength we receive from the Church’s structures: parish community, diocese, universal Church.

□ Session 3: “Aids” to defend my Catholic faith—Thursday, October 27th—6:30-8:00 p.m. Catechism Chapters 2 & 4: Many Catholics hesitate to defend their Faith because they fear confrontation. Training our-selves ahead of time equips us to address questions and misconceptions while at the same time diminishing the stress of uncer-tainty about the Faith. It’s not uncommon to accidentally—or not so accidentally—overhear conversation in which someone is badmouthing the Catholic Church and its teachings. In what ways do you find it difficult to be open about your faith in public situations? Learn to identify and respond to challenges posed by popular culture to people of faith.

□ Session 4: Why have children baptized and confirmed in the Church?— Thursday, November 3rd—6:30-8:00 p.m. Catechism Chapters 15 & 16: Catholics believe Baptism is more than a sign. We believe something very profound and tangible happens during Baptism. Catholics also believe the sacrament of Confirmation completes our baptismal grace. We will discuss the effects of the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation.

□ Session 5: Why get married in the Church?—Thursday, November 10th—6:30-8:00 p.m. Catechism Chapter 21: “We want a destination wedding” “ Can we get married in the park?” “Why do we have to get mar-ried in Church?” How society impacted the definition or understanding of what constitutes the sacrament of marriage. We will discuss the importance of the vocation to marriage and what we can do to help strengthen married couples.

□ Session 6: Why go to Confession?—Thursday, November 17th—6:30-8:00 p.m. Catechism Chapter 18: “Why can’t I just pray to God for forgiveness? Why do I have to confess my sins to a priest?” Not only does the Sacrament of Penance free us from our sins but it also challenges us to have the same kind of compassion and forgiveness for those who sin against us. Come and hear more about this Sacrament so rich in God’s mercy.

If you share in this desire to know more about what it means to be Catholic, please join us!
All Sessions will be held in Francis Hall of the Parish Center at North Lake from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Refreshments will be available. Bring your Catholic Catechism for Adults and Reader’s Journal to each session (additional copies will be available).
