Director of Liturgical Music

The Director of Liturgical Music is a full time, salaried, professional member of the Pastoral Staff averaging 30 hours per week. He/she assists the pastor and works with the Liturgical Committee in exercising musical leadership in the parish. He/she works a flexible schedule as determined by the activities of the day and seasons of the year, which will include evening and weekend work.

Job Description:

  1. Responsible for providing music for the liturgical celebrations on weekends, holy days, school liturgies, Holy Week, reconciliation services, morning prayer, stations of the cross, sacramental celebrations (i.e. First Eucharist, Confirmation) and any other special occasions as determined by the pastor/supervisor.
    1. choose relevant music for each service
      1. maintain parish music library
      2. obtain copyright permissions, prepare the liturgical orders of worship for parish celebrations, and report music usage to appropriate companies.
    2. function as the primary musician (organ and/or piano)
    3. coordinate the music ministry, i.e. cantors, instrumentalists, choirs
  2. Recruits, trains, directs and supervises cantors, instrumental ensembles (including handbell choirs) and choirs for all liturgical celebrations.
    1. Prepare ministry schedules for these ministries.
    2. Arranges for instrumental resources as needed (i.e. special feasts and celebrations such as Christmas, Easter, etc.)
  3. Prepares assembly for liturgies through rehearsals prior to liturgies, rehearsals with students in parish school or Christian Formation programs.
  4. Communicate through parish bulletin and newsletters as needed.
  5. Actively participates in parish organizations including pastoral/parish staff, Liturgy committee, liturgy preparation groups.
  6. Develops budget for liturgical music and manages funds allocated in a fiscally responsible manner, submitting check requests as needed.
  7. Responsible for music at weddings and funerals.
    1. Pastor will forward music choices for celebration
    2. prepare orders of worship.
    3. Provide music as the primary musician.
    4. Coordinate music ministers, i.e. cantors, instrumentalists, choirs 
    5. Consultation, playing and singing at funerals and weddings is expected but over and above the job description, and will be compensated by family per service.
  8. Finds substitute musician when needed for weekend liturgies, funeral Masses, weddings, special events, etc.
  9. Maintains and develops personal and professional skills through regular rehearsal and practice.
  10. Participate in ongoing formation opportunities through Archdiocesan meetings and ALMA.
  11. Participates in liturgical music projects of the Archdiocese when feasible.
  12. To unlock/lock the church before and after liturgical celebrations. Assist with the setting up of portable screen for video screening programs in the church when needed.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned by the Pastor.

Qualifications

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing and able to partake fully in the sacramental life of the Church.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Music.
  • Proficient in piano, organ and choral direction.
  • Knowledge of various musical styles (traditional, contemporary, folk, praise and worship) as they apply to Catholic worship
  • Motivated, team oriented and flexible with organizational skills, well-developed personal and relationship skills and strong communication abilities.
  • Computer competency in Microsoft and Publisher, and able to use online music programs.

 

Working Environment

  • Must understand the sensitive and public profile nature of the work of the church. Should adhere to the highest standards of good practices and confidentiality. Must be proactive in support of the church's mission statement, goals, policies and programs. Flexibility in work schedule and work styles is expected given the nature of a family centric parish.

ADA Physical Requirements:

  • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods; use hands; reach with hands and arms.
  • Close vision required for paperwork and computer.
  • Able to utilize computer keyboard, monitor, and telephone.
  • This role partially functions in an office environment and uses standard office equipment.
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds.
