Help for Haiti
In times of global crisis, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee’s Office for
World Mission, along with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) provides access to information. In 2010, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee joined Catholics across the world to respond to the cry of the poor in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. Through your collective generosity, the Office for World Mission managed the collection of over one million dollars which has been distributed as follows in the years since the earthquake:
-
One-third of the funds to Catholic Relief Services for immediate needs which included health, housing and food for displaced Haitians;
-
One-third to support re-building / reinforcing the educational infrastructure after the devastation of the earthquake; and
-
One-third distributed in support of long term needs to be assessed by parishes with twinning relationships with Haiti from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
As we witness the complete destruction of communities by Hurricane Matthew, we are now sending the balance of funds raised to assist in these re-building efforts. Many of these efforts are being spearheaded by our own parishes twinning with communities in Haiti.
In the months and years to come, there will be even greater needs for the people who have so little and have lost so much in Haiti. As we share this update with you, we ask you to keep our Haitian brothers and sisters in your prayer. This is a long-term re-building effort and support will be needed beyond this immediate moment. Please consider the ways you might help:
-
Prayer – join the twinning parishes listed below in prayer for the people of Haiti;
-
Donate to support any one of the following local parish initiatives:
Gesu Parish, Milwaukee
Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Milwaukee
St. Frances Cabrini Parish, West Bend
St. Mary Parish, Hales Corners
Shepherd of the Hills Parish, Eden
As we near the end of this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we are again reminded that there is always a need to respond to God’s call for mercy, helping our brothers and sisters who are hungry, homeless and without the basic essentials for daily life. Let’s keep the people of Haiti and all who assist in relief services in our prayers.
