Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki, Archbishop of Milwaukee, has named Susan Nelson interim superintendent of Catholic schools.
Nelson currently serves as director of the Academics and Faith Center of Excellence for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, a position she has held since July 2008. The Academics and Faith Center aims to strengthen the Catholic identity of all Catholic schools and guides improvements in academic excellence.
Nelson will serve as interim superintendent until a permanent superintendent of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee is found. Archbishop Listecki this week appointed Most Reverend William Callahan, auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee, to chair a search committee that will recommend a candidate for the superintendent position.
The goal is to have a new superintendent of Catholic schools in place before the start of the 2010-2011 school year.
Before being named director of the Academics and Faith Center of Excellence, Nelson held the position of associate superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment for five years. She has served as both teacher and principal at St. Margaret Mary School in Milwaukee. Nelson earned both her Bachelor of Arts and her Master of Arts in Education at Mount Mary College.
Nelson serves on the St. Clare Center for Ministry Formation Advisory Board at Cardinal Stritch University, the Mount Mary College Alumnae Association Board, the Mount Mary Teacher Education Advisory Committee, the Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools, the UWM Council for Economics Education and the Milwaukee Art Museum Board of Directors’ Education & Public Programs Committee. She is a member of the National Catholic Education Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum and Development and the National Staff Development Council. Nelson also serves as adjunct instructor at both Mount Mary College and Cardinal Stritch University.
