Fr. Peter Berger Associate Director of Vocations, St. Francis de Sales Seminary
This week marks Vocations Awareness Week, when we pray in a particular way for vocations to the priesthood and to the religious life. It’ll come as no surprise that the Church is in need of vocations to the priesthood and to the religious life, but while numbers have declined, God is still calling men and women to these important vocations. Each of us can help build up a culture of vocations in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee through prayer, through our example of fidelity to our own commitments and through encouraging young people to ask themselves what God wants them to do with their lives. The Vocations Office exists to help people to discern their call, especially focusing on the call to diocesan priesthood. We have numerous events that we offer for various age groups to help in that discernment. Some of our offerings include our annual summer camps – “Camp Jeremiah” for junior high school boys and “Is it I, Lord?” for high school boys; discernment groups – the Immaculate Heart of Mary Discernment Group for high school boys and the Sacred Heart of Jesus Discernment Group for young adult men; and various activities throughout the course of the year, like Ultimate Frisbee, Bowling Night, and Winter Baseball. Furthermore, the Vocations Office makes visits to parishes and to schools to talk about vocations and helps welcome groups to our own St. Francis de Sales Seminary for tours and events. If you are interested in learning more about our work, check out our Web site, www.thinkpriest.org or the seminary Web site, www.sfs.edu. Please consider making a commitment to pray on a daily basis for vocations, especially through the intercession of St. Francis de Sales! Live Jesus!
