Deaf Apostolate

Provides consultation and deaf/hard of hearing awareness and information to Catholics.

The Deaf Apostolate staff of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, provide deaf/hard of hearing awareness, information, and education. They serve as consultants for Deaf/hard of hearing persons in Catholic parishes and schools. This office coordinates, implements, and evaluates services and programs for Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf/blind persons. Staff members recruit and train individuals to serve the religious needs of the Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf/blind people within the archdiocese.

The Deaf Apostolate assists parishes to identify needs and plan to achieve accessibility goals. Members of the Office of the Deaf Apostolate work closely with the Wisconsin School for the Deaf, the Deaf/Blind Center and the International Catholic Deaf Association.

  When is a sign language interpreter provided in church?

An interpreter is provided upon request.

The Deaf Apostolate Office will work with individual parishes to establish services to meet the communication needs of the members.

  Are there religious education programs that specifically serve the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population?

Yes. St. Andrew Parish, in Delavan, teaches kindergarteners through seniors in high school. St. Matthias Parish, in Milwaukee, teaches child and adult religious education. An interpreter can also be scheduled for any religious education program.
