Restricted Priests

In line with the assurances given in the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, these are the names of diocesan priests* of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee who have been (or would be if they were still alive) restricted from all priestly ministries, may not celebrate the sacraments publicly, or present themselves as priests in any way. In addition, in accordance with the canonical norms that have been established, the allegations against any living priest are sent to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome.

*The Archdiocese of Milwaukee does not list the names of Religious Order Priests or Externs (Priests from another diocese who served in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee), who may have committed crimes of sexual abuse of minors, and at some point in their ministry, worked in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

Because those priests are not accountable to the Archbishop of Milwaukee, but rather to their Religious Superior or Diocesan Bishop, the Archdiocese has no way of knowing what allegations may have been received; whether they included allegations while in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee; how allegations were investigated; what standard was used in determining substantiation; and how allegations were eventually resolved. There is also no certainty that the Archdiocese would be informed of allegations against every priest who worked at some point in the Archdiocese.

Instead of publishing what would be an incomplete list, the Archdiocese leaves the listing of names of clergy with substantiated allegations to their respective Religious Order or Arch/Diocese.
