The Archdiocese of Milwaukee seeks an energetic, highly motivated student to fill the position of Archives Assistant. This position facilitates the work of the archive by assisting the archivists with basic archival and records management tasks. Primary duties may include anything from reference requests, processing, digitization, exhibit creation, or basic electronic management tasks. This is an 8 hour a week position intended for a student pursuing a career in Archives. The archives of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee maintains the history of the archdiocese and provides guidance on sacramental records and genealogical resources.
a. Assist with the appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation of archival collections according to current archival standards.
b. Provide researchers, genealogists, and in-house staff with appropriate assistance and reference services (by phone, letter, email, on-site)
c. Digitize photographs and prepare metadata workbooks
d. Work collaboratively to establish sustainable workflow of digital archive infrastructure
e. Assist with the supervision of the archive's reading room
f. Assist with other archival projects or other duties as needed
g. Perform other office tasks as needed, e.g. photocopying
Secretarial functions and Office management-
a. Compose correspondence for various purposes
b. Serve as a general receptionist for the archives
c. Handle and/or respond to incoming phone calls
d. Perform other office tasks as needed, e.g. photocopying
Required: Undergraduate degree in History or closely related field. Minimum of one year experience in an archival or library setting. Basic understanding of historical research methods and records management.
Preferred: Current enrollment in an ALA accredited Masters degree program in Library and Information Science or closely related field with archival coursework and content. Basic knowledge of Church history and/or Wisconsin history.
