Director of Formation Ministries

The Director of Formation Ministries provides leadership, facilitates, inspires and enables others in ministry, building community as needed. This position serves as a staff resource in fulfilling the Catholic education and faith formation needs of those in middle school through high school, with some ministry to those transitioning into the young adult years and the RCIA program. In response to the needs of the parish community, this person, in partnership with fellow team members, envisions, designs, implements and evaluates programming and ministry for life-long faith formation. This person will work cooperatively with a focus on youth ministries to implement comprehensive youth ministry, including advocacy, catechesis, community life, evangelization, justice & service, leadership development, pastoral care, and prayer and worship, into a model of whole community catechesis and other programs as appropriate.

Major Position Responsibilities and Regular Activities

  • Serve as an administrator of the parish Youth Ministry Program
  • Serve as Liaison for the Young Adult and RCIA programs
  • Ministry of Worship and Spiritual Life
    • Assists, as needed, in the formation and preparation of individuals and families for the sacraments.
    • Assists, as needed, in the preparation of parish sacramental celebrations through collaboration with all stakeholders.
  • Ministry of Education
    • Leads and inspires formation staff in maintaining a vision for lifelong Catholic education and faith development, guiding children, youth and young adults to discipleship.
    • Assists in the formation of the entire community in the understanding of the parish mission.
    • Collaborates with other parish staff in providing child, youth and adult religious formation, including catechist formation.
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive youth ministry program based on USCCB Renewing the Vision.
    • Develop and implement a curriculum for youth within a unified life-long faith formation plan.
    • Organize an annual retreat for the youth at each grade level.
    • Oversee the coordination of sacramental preparation for youth Confirmation.
    • Recruit, train, evaluate and supervise program staff and provide resources for effective ministry.
    • Maintain effective relationships with parents, students and staff members.
    • Collaborate with cluster parishes to provide ministries to youth of all parishes in the most effective manner.
  • Administration
    • Attends appropriate staff, committee, Pastoral Council and Archdiocesan meetings as warranted.
    • Maintenance of a regular public communication program.
    • Maintenance of appropriate records, including monitoring the purchasing and distribution of resource materials, and providing budget control over areas of responsibility by modeling good stewardship of parish resources.
    • In collaboration with staff and volunteers, prepares and manages the GIFT, youth ministries, young adult, and adult formation budgets.
    • Guided by the rules and regulations as contained in the local policies or as prescribed in other official ways, as well as the policies and regulations of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee Office of Catechesis and Youth Ministry and the Office of Parish Finances.
    • Maintains and serves as Parish contact for Safeguarding All God’s Children program.


  • Religious Requirements
    • Must be a practicing Catholic with training in current Catholic theology, Christology and ecclesiology.
  • Education
    • A Bachelor’s or equivalent certification in a related field or relevant experience; A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Experience
    • At least three-years parish pastoral experience in which leadership, youth formation, and sacramental preparation have been demonstrated.
  • Skills, Knowledge, and/or Abilities
    • Knowledge of parish mission statement and ability to apply it to actual situations.
    • Ability to project a faith-filled presence.
    • Knowledge of Catholic social teaching and ability to apply it to actual situations.
    • Working knowledge of computer operations and office equipment. 
    • Ability to work cooperatively, collaboratively and effectively with parishioners, staff, and others.
    • Demonstrated ability in needs assessment, program coordination, and volunteer recruitment and training.
    • Effective communication, interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills


  • Working Environment

    • Must understand the sensitive and public profile nature of the work of the church. Should adhere to the highest standards of good practices and confidentiality. Must be proactive in support of the church's mission statement, goals, policies and programs. Flexibility in work schedule and work styles is expected given the nature of a family centric parish.
