Director of Liturgy & Music, St. Joseph Parish - Grafton

Under the direction of the Administrator/Pastor and working within the plan and budget of the Worship department, carry out these responsibilities and tasks –

  1. Collaborate with the Administrator/Pastor and other parish staff members in implementing the mission of the parish through comprehensive planning, execution, and evaluation of the parish programs, goals and objectives, with specific focus on prayer and worship. Serve as a resource person in the area of liturgy. Also, as appropriate collaborate in regional and diocesan planning and program efforts.
  1. Coordinate, in cooperation with other staff members and the parish’s Worship Committee, the prayer and worship programs of the parish, including the preparation of the weekend liturgies, and the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the Eucharistic and sacramental celebrations of the parish.
  1. Serve as a member of the parish Pastoral Staff and as a member and staff resource person to the Worship Committee.
  1. Coordinate the work of the liturgical ministers, including the music ministers (choirs and cantors), lectors, Eucharistic ministers, servers and acolytes, sacristans, artists (environment/decorations), and ministers of hospitality (ushers/greeters).  This includes working with volunteer coordinators and is accomplished by recruiting, screening, training, scheduling, enriching and supporting these ministers.
  1. Provide adequate materials for worship. This is accomplished (in consultation with others) by overseeing the purchase and supply of sacred vessels, liturgical books, vestments, candles, wine, hosts and other liturgical supplies.
  1. Oversee the church space, making sure all is prepared for use, including the maintenance of musical instruments, sound systems and the tower bells.
  1. Provide service playing for the regular weekend parish liturgies, as well as all holy days, sacramental celebrations and special parish liturgical events as directed by the Administrator/Pastor.
  1. Recruit, train, direct and supervise choirs, singing groups, cantors, instrumentalists and ensembles; prepares such groups and individuals, as well as the parish assembly, for liturgical music and song.
  1. Prepare and manage the budget for the Worship department.
  1. Maintain a current level of knowledge and skills required to function as the parish liturgy/music minister. This is accomplished by updating, through reading and attendance at workshops, conferences and conventions. Also participates in local, diocesan, regional and national professional liturgy/liturgical music organizations.
  1. Provide for liturgical updating and formation of the parish through the parish bulletin and e-communication. Work with other staff members, to foster such formation and development.
  1. Perform all the above functions, plus others which may be assigned by the Administrator/Pastor from time to time, all consistent with the time limitations set forth with this position.

Qualifications

Experience, Education and Knowledge

  1. Practicing Catholic able to fully participate in the Sacramental Life of the Church.
  2. Three to five years of experience working in a parish/church.
  3. B.A. degree or above in liturgy and/or music. 
  4. Knowledge of the Roman Missal, lectionary, liturgical year, liturgical tradition and norms, and the ability to teach them to the parish and to the various ministers, both by speaking and in writing.
  5. Knowledge of the liturgical publications and materials available to parishes -- including music -- and the ability to use those materials effectively.
  6. Knowledge of the duties of the various ministries involved in worship, and the ability to communicate effectively with such ministers.
  7. Commitment to continuing formation in areas of liturgy and music
  8. Working knowledge in presentation, work processing, and email programs.
  9. Must have a valid driver’s license for the State of Wisconsin.

Skills and Abilities

  1. Proficient in the use of the organ and other keyboard instruments.
  2. Working knowledge of other instruments which can be used in liturgical music.
  3. Ability to direct choral groups and accompany soloists.
  4. Excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills to work with parishioners, volunteers, parish staff, and other parishes.
  5. Very good verbal and written communication skills; ability to do written and oral presentations.
  6. Very good organization, management and leadership skills, with the ability to delegate.
  7. Budgeting skills.
