Director/Coordinator of Liturgy & Music

Duties and Responsibilities:

Administrative Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates and prepares liturgies, in accordance with Archdiocesan office as appropriate.  
  2. Responsible for opening and closing for weekend masses, as well as finding a substitute to do so if you will be gone.
  3. Budget and expenses:
    • Prepares annual budget.
    • Monitor expenses monthly.
  4. Recruits and uses volunteers in all areas of responsibility, as appropriate.
  5. Attends staff meetings.
  6. Attends Prayer & Worship Committee Meetings as an ex-officio member.
  7. Attends other meetings at the request of the Parish Administrator.  
  8. Acts as a resource (not member) for Pastoral Council.
  9. Member of ALMA (Archdiocesan Liturgical Musician’s Association), the Association of Pastoral Musicians, or other appropriate professional organizations is encouraged.

Liturgical and Worship Ministry:

  1. Collaborates with the Pastor/Priest to manifest his vision for the liturgical year, liturgical season, and sacramental celebrations.
  2. Coordinates the liturgical spirit of the parish and fosters hospitality and harmony.
  3. Fosters parishioner participation in the Mass/service.
  4. Prepares written liturgical schedule for the year, 3 months in advance.
  5. Taps into committees to gain feedback on the liturgical experience for continuous improvement.
  6. Assist visiting clergy.
  7. Plan and coordinate practice(s)/rehearsals.
  8. Coordinates music with liturgical plan.
  9. Participates fully in the liturgy and greets people after the liturgy.
  10. Documents readings, songs, etc. for each Mass and service, as a reference.
  11. Creates operating procedures for each aspect of the position.
  12. Maintain/Update worship hymnals/worship aids/booklets.

Music Ministry:

  1. Oversees/Plans music for all liturgies including weekend, weekday, penance services, Stations of the Cross, Holidays, Holydays, baptisms, and others as needed.
  2. Accompanies funeral, wedding, and other special liturgies as needed and for additional stipend given by those requesting said funeral, wedding, or special liturgies.
  3. Fosters parishioner participation in music.
  4. Foster unity among all musicians to create a spirit of harmony with presider and other liturgical ministers.
  5. Directs, conducts rehearsals, recruits members for, and accompanies all choir(s); including children’s choir
  6. Recruits, selects, and trains instrumentalists and creates ensembles.
  7. Coordinates the Cantor Ministry, including scheduling, recruitment and training.
  8. Coordinates the Sound Board Ministry, including scheduling, recruitment and training.
  9. Coordinates the Video Ministry, including scheduling, recruitment and training as needed.
  10. Coordinates music e.g., instrumentalist, cantors, choirs, etc. with liturgical plan. Provides all music ministers with appropriate music for all liturgies (accompaniment, books, special music, etc.).
  11. Ensures organ, piano, and other instruments are maintained, repaired and tuned, as needed.
  12. Expands song as prayer into the spirituality of the liturgy.
  13. Creates operating procedures for each aspect of the position.
  14. Maintains music collection and ensures copyright and licensing requirement permissions for music.

Other:

  1. Ensures qualified substitutes are enlisted when absent for Mass/service, funerals, weddings, etc.
  2. Collaborates with other staff and acts as a resource for parish groups.
  3. Fosters positive public relations in and outside the parish.
  4. Attends respective Archdiocesan and Deanery workshops/programs, as needed.
  5. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Knowledge

  1. Bachelor’s degree in music, music education, liturgical music or equivalent required.
  2. Experience leading Catholic liturgy.
  3. Knowledge of the Roman Missal, lectionary, liturgical year, liturgical norms and regulations, and liturgical tradition and practice.
  4. Proven effective choral conducting techniques.
  5. Fluency in a wide variety of musical styles.
  6. Working knowledge of instrumentation.
  7. Working knowledge in MS Office products.
  8. Must have a valid driver’s license for the State of Wisconsin.
  9. Practicing Catholic required.

Skills

  1. Professional working attitude and collaborative approach.
  2. Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  3. Strong organizational skills.
  4. Performance skills for keyboard, organ, and/or other musical instrument and voice.

Abilities

  1. Demonstrated ability to work with volunteers and to delegate tasks required.
  2. Ability to assist and train the amateur voice.
  3. Ability to multitask and prioritize.
  4. Ability to make decisions, attentive to details, and troubleshoot.
  5. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

ADA Physical Requirements:

  1. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear.
  2. The employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods; use hands; reach with hands and arms.
  3. Close vision required for paperwork and computer.
  4. Able to utilize computer keyboard, monitor, and telephone.
  5. This role functions in an office environment and uses standard office equipment.
  6. Ability to lift 20 pounds.
