Early Childhood Classroom Aide

Primary Function of this Position:

  1. Provide classroom and clerical aid to teachers.

  2. Assist the teacher by providing students with individual tutoring.

  3. Provide students with instructional reinforcement.

  4. Monitor nonacademic settings upon request for activities like lunchroom supervision, morning arrival of students, and the chaperoning of field trips.

  5. Monitor classroom behavior and assist classroom teacher with behavioral support.

  6. Attend specials, (Library, Music, Art, PE) with the class and assist Specialist Teacher as needed. 

Major Responsibilities & Regular Activities:

 

  1. Exhibits a thorough understanding of classroom materials and instructional methods.  

    2.   Displays computer skills as well as a familiarity with audio-visual equipment.

  1. Possesses strong verbal and written skills in order to communicate the progress of students. 

  2. Displays the ability to assist students who may be experiencing difficulties.

  3. Demonstrates patience.

  4. Since assistants will be working with students from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures, the teacher aide must provide students with accurate and fair information and guidance.

  5. Assesses the progress of students by observing their performance and recording relevant data.

  6. Attends to students who speak English as a second language.

  7. Meets accepted standards of professional behavior.

  8. Exhibits professionalism and commitment through punctuality and attendance.

  9. Observes all policies and procedures as established by the administration.

  10. Assists with strategies for maintaining orderly classroom behavior on an individual and group basis.

  11. Monitors a small group of children in the classroom while the teacher is working with other students.

  12. Assists the teacher in the development of materials, projects, and activities to use with teacher-directed lessons.

  13. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

  14. Maintains confidentiality of school matters in and out of the school setting, between classrooms, and with students and parents.

 

Relationships with Students, Parents and Staff

  1. Works with teacher to establish and maintain open and positive lines of communication with students, other staff, and parents concerning academics, language, and behavior.

  2. Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other staff members.

  3. Assists the teacher/administrator in upholding and enforcing school rules and policies.

  4. Accepts other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

 

  1. Completed Safeguarding All God’s Children class

  2. Signed Code of Ethics

  3. Criminal background check

  4. High School diploma and other pertinent educational experience

  5. Any instructional experience with children in the classroom setting
