Part-Time Security Guard - School Year (10-month)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff, and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation.   
  2. Conducts and monitors fire drills, lock downs and other emergency procedure drills for the purpose of complying with established guidelines. 
  3. Escorts students, school personnel and/or visitors for the purpose of providing direction, ensuring safety, and providing site security. 
  4. Monitors student behavior during and between assigned periods and at student events (e.g., lunchroom, classrooms, detention, dances, home games, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, and secure facility.   
  5. Participates in in-service training, workshops, etc. as required.  
  6. Makes routine and scheduled foot and driving patrols of the building grounds/ parking areas, maintaining a high degree of visibility at all times. 
  7. Provides traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lots. 
  8. Refers incidents of suspicious activities, etc. to appropriate personnel and/or city police for the purpose of ensuring follow-up in accordance with administrative, site security and student safety guidelines.   
  9. Responds to a variety of situations (i.e., accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns. 
  10. Protects and/or watches over school assets and spaces.
  11. Watches security cameras to detect any form of suspicious activity within the environment. 
  12. Maintains written logs.
  13. Provides assistance to students, staff, and visitors in a friendly and polite manner.
  14. Manages card access system.
  15. Completes other duties as assigned. 


Education and/or Experience  
High School diploma or equivalent. Two years’ experience working with youth and adults in an organized setting with School Safety, law enforcement, or security work experience preferred.   
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Ability to adhere to safety and security practices.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment including software.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records. 
  • Ability to understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly.
  • Ability to analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.   
  • Ability to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups. 
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities. 
  • Ability to communicate with diverse groups. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality. 
  • Ability to work as part of a team. 
  • Ability to work under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods.
  • Knowledge of health standards and hazards. 
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.   
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license is required. 
  • Must have good interpersonal skills, i.e., he/she must be a people person.
  • Evidence of self-defense training(s) and evidence of past firearm certification.
  • Must be able to pass insurance criteria to drive school vehicle.  

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; talk or hear; and use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. Occasionally, the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend, or reach above the shoulders. 
The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
