Under the direction of the Rector of the Shrine, the Week-End Sacristan is responsible for the overall care and cleanliness of the sacristy, worship environment, sacred vessels, vestments and other liturgical items, as well as the set-up of each Mass and clearing afterwards. The Week-End Sacristan oversees the student sacristans who are assigned to assist in these daily responsibilities. Responsiblilties also include monitoring and maintaining a schedule of events book and the preparation for the liturgical events themselves. The Week-End Sacristan also oversees the proper security of all collections taken at each Mass and monitors and maintains Shrine votive candle handling, and ensures proper closure of the Shrine when visiting hours have ended. The Weekend Sacristan will also perform additional duties as assigned by the Rector.
Qualifications
Must be knowledgeable of components in the sacristy and related areas and be able to handle things such as vestments, vessels, and supplies in a safe and proper manner with one to three years experience as a sacristan in the Roman Catholic Tradition preferred. Ability to read and interpret documents such as bulletins and schedules and be able to communicate effectively with Presiders, Carmelite personnel and other employees of the organization. Ability to operate basic cleaning equipment, be able to regularly stand, walk, use hands, bend over, kneel, etc., and react to audio cues and communicate clearly. The employee must be able to climb stairs and be able to do some light lifting; maintenance will assist in moving heavier equipment.
An understanding of the liturgical year and the décor and decorum in the celebration of the Mass and other liturgical events in the Roman Catholic Tradition is required.
The successful candidate will exhibit a cooperative and collaborative attitude in working with the Carmelite Community, pilgrims and special guests of Holy Hill.
