Becoming Catholic

Welcome home! Whether you are a baptized Catholic who has been away from the Church, a baptized non-Catholic, or not baptized at all, we are so happy you are here. This page exists to help you take the next step in “coming home” to the Catholic Church.

If you are not Catholic

The process to become Catholic is known as the “Order of Christian Initiation of Adults” (OCIA). OCIA is a journey marked by specific steps aimed at gradually introducing you into life as a Catholic. In general, these steps are like a marriage (in this case, with Christ and His Church as the groom, and us as the bride).

This process changes slightly depending on whether you are already baptized, your current practice as a Christian, and past experiences with the Catholic Church. No matter your background, your local parish is ready to welcome you, answer your questions, and start the process with you!

Please see the steps below:

If you are already Catholic...

...but want to return to practicing your faith.

  • Praise the Lord! No matter how long it’s been, what’s happened, or why, Christ and His Church rejoice over your desire to return. Just like in the story of the Prodigal Son, the Father has been eagerly awaiting your return, and welcomes you back with open arms.

  • The process to “come home” is the same for most Catholics:

    • Find a local parish!
    • Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation
    • If it’s been awhile, these resources may help!
    • Return to the regular practice of your Catholic faith through prayer, Mass, and community.

Note: if there are past hurts that you need to process, speaking to a priest or parish staff person might be a good idea. They are there to help!
