Position Summary:

The Middle School Social Studies and Religion Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering engaging instruction in social studies and religion for middle school students. This teacher supports students in developing strong academic skills, historical understanding, critical thinking, faith formation, and a deeper understanding of Catholic (and Jesuit) values.

 

This position also includes support of a middle school homeroom.  The ideal candidate is a strong classroom leader who holds high expectations for students, builds positive relationships with families, and collaborates effectively with colleagues as part of a team. 

 

Essential Responsibilities:

Instruction and Curriculum

  • Plan and deliver engaging middle school social studies and religion lessons.
  • Teach content related to history, geography, civics, justice, Catholic teaching, Scripture, service, and Jesuit identity.
  • Use varied instructional strategies and assessment data to support diverse learners and student growth.
  • Create lessons that promote critical thinking, discussion, reflection, writing, and student voice.

Classroom Culture and Student Support

  • Build a respectful, caring classroom culture where students feel a sense of belonging.
  • Set clear expectations, maintain consistent routines, and support strong student habits.
  • Communicate proactively with families about progress, concerns, and celebrations.
  • Collaborate with student support staff to implement accommodations, interventions, and behavior supports.
  • Serve as a positive role model who reflects Nativity Jesuit Academy’s mission and values.

Faith Formation and Mission

  • Support the Catholic and Jesuit mission of the school.
  • Help students grow in faith, prayer, service, reflection, and leadership.
  • Participate in Masses, prayer services, retreats, and mission-centered activities.
  • Help students understand what it means to be men and women for and with others.

Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the middle school team, school leadership, and support staff.
  • Maintain accurate records of grades, attendance, assessments, and family communication.
  • Prepare students for classroom and schoolwide academic expectations.
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences and student support meetings as needed.
  • Attend required professional development, spiritual formation, and school events, including but not limited to August Orientation, retreats, Sustaining the Mission, PD days, Back to School Night, Open Houses, conferences, Scholarship Dinner, and Graduation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Position Qualifications: 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Appropriate Wisconsin DPI teaching license, or ability to obtain/transfer licensure
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Commitment to working with students and families in an urban Catholic school setting
  • Must be a practicing Catholic

 

Preferred:

  • Experience teaching middle school students
  • Background in social studies, history, education, theology, religious studies, or related field
  • Experience working in urban education
  • Previous teaching experience, ideally three or more years
  • Experience with differentiated instruction and data-driven teaching practices
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
