Bienaventurados Ministry

Bienaventurados Ministry for the families of incarcerated is an archdiocesan Spanish support group.

for Families of the Incarcerated

Our mission

Bienaventurados Ministry exists to support families who suffer the incarceration of a loved one by providing a space in which they can share their common experiences, walk together in solidarity, and mutually offer understanding, strength and  hope.

Our vision

Inspired by our faith and the Beatitudes, we are dedicated to bringing comfort, strength, mercy and hope to the families of the incarcerated, helping them realize that they are not alone, and that God has not forgotten them.

The families need support to reconcile their feelings about their loved one’s incarceration, and to address the loss, hurt, confusion incarceration causes. They need a space where they feel free from the stigma, shame and trauma of incarceration; one that helps them build stronger family relationships, and where they can develop survival skills to face their new reality.

The numbers are increasing and the problem is growing. Over the last 30 years, the U.S. prison population has increased by 500%.

  • 23% of prisoners are married.
  • 55% of male prisoners and 75% of female prisoners report having children under 18.
  • About 2.8% of all children in the U.S. (one in forty) under the age of 18 have at least one parent in a local or in a state or federal prison.
