Archdiocese of Milwaukee is offering a patch commemorating our 175th Anniversary.  Patch can be earned by young people in grades 1st - 12th by completing the activities that help them learn about the history of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.   This is a great activity for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, youth groups, classes, families or any young Catholics. Adults who assist youth with requirements and activities are eligible to earn the patch as well. When requirements are complete, patches are purchased online through the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.


How to start:

Research the history of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. You can find the answers to the questions below using: 

1st-5th Grades: Complete the first 4 requirements and any 2 activities.
6th-12th Grades: Complete the first 4 requirements plus one more, and any 3 activities.
Adults: Assist youth with requirements and activities (i.e. reviewing responses and sharing experiences), and fill out the order form and submit.

Requirements:
  • Pray the 175th Anniversary Prayer.
  • After reading about the history of the early missionary period of our diocese (AD 30-1843), answer the following questions: What year was the diocese created? Who was the first Bishop of the diocese?
  • Learn about one key priest in the early missionary period of the Archdiocese:
    • Fr. Jacques Marquette
    • Fr. Florimond Bonduel
    • Fr. Martin Kundig
  • Pick one other period of diocesan history, and learn about important events that happened during this time period, as well as some key people during that time period.
  • The Archdiocese of Milwaukee is currently made up of 10 counties. Name all 10 counties within Archdiocese’s jurisdiction.
  • There have been 11 Archbishops since the creation of the Diocese of Milwaukee. Name all 11 Archbishops.

Activities:

  • Participate in any 175th Anniversary Event:
    • Pray, Reconcile and Rejoice: 12 Hours of Reconciliation
    • 175 Alive
    • 175th Anniversary Exploration
    • Seven Days of Service
    • Closing Mass
  • Learn about whom or what your parish is named after.
  • Be a Parish historian. What year was your parish founded? Learn about life in your parish/neighborhood when it was founded. How has it changed?
  • Ask your parent or a relative what being Catholic was like when they were a kid.
  • Interview someone who has been in your parish for a long time. Ask them what the parish was like back when they joined.
  • Visit one of these historic places in the Archdiocese: 
    • Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist
    • Saint Francis de Sales Seminary
    • Basilica of Saint Josaphat
    • Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians at Holy Hill
    • St. Peter’s Cathedral at Old World Wisconsin
    • Archdiocesan Marian Shrine (Milwaukee Fatima Shrine)
    • Any Catholic Cemetery (Archdiocesan or Parish)
