The Feast Day of the Virgen de Altagracia, Patroness of the Dominican Republic and Haiti

January 21 is a very special day in your sister parish, La Sagrada Familia, in the Dominican Republic. This is because January 21 is the feast day of their patroness, the Virgen de Altagracia (Virgin of Highest Grace).

She is the patroness of the entire island of Hispaniola, which includes the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The image of the Virgen de Altagracia, also known as Our Lady of Altagracia, had long been venerated in Spain. This image has existed in Hispaniola since the 1500's, when it was brought to Higuey, in the island's southeastern corner.

The image of Altagracia is a nativity scene, showing the Holy Family (La Sagrada Familia). Mary is shown, hands praying, in the center of the image. In front of her sleeps the infant Jesus, while behind her, Saint Joseph is seen holding a candle. The bishop of Higuey has commented that the image is an icon, full of symbols and wisdom, where Dominicans can find the truths of their faith.

The Dominican enthusiasm for their patroness stems from a popular legend. The story stated that a rich man was searching for the image at his daughter's request. When he explained to a friend that he could not find the image, a mysterious man walked by and gave him the image for which he searched. When the family tried to display the image in their home, however, it disappeared and reappeared in a blossoming orange tree. When this continued to occur, it was believed to mean that the image could not belong to one family, but must be for all Dominicans. Therefore, it was moved to be displayed publicly in the local parish.

In 1572, a larger temple was dedicated to Altagracia. In 1972, the image was moved to the Basilica of Higuey, where it is today. The Basilica is a pilgrimage site for worshippers of Our Lady, who come to pray for spiritual and physical well-being, to make promises that they will perform a particular penance for answered prayers, and to thank Altagracia for her divine action.

In our sister parish, the image of the Virgen de Altagracia is prominently displayed in homes of the faithful.
