When engaging in a mission experience abroad it is not always essential that you are fluent in the language of the country you will be visiting, but it is often important that you have a basic understanding of key phrases. This will help you to communicate with all of the wonderful people you are about to encounter. Here are a few suggestions and basic resources to get you going!

  • If you have no knowledge of the language at all, pick up a workbook at your local bookstore or library to become familiar with basic vocabulary.
  • Purchase a computer program like Rosetta Stone or utilize online resources including Live Mocha and Mango Languages.
  • Enroll in classes at your local language institutes.

Colleges and Universities

These institutions often have a language program under their Continuing Education Program or Adult Enrichment programs. Contact your local college or university to find out what they are offering.

  •  International Language Institutes

It is also possible to spend some time studying a language in that country. Depending upon the type of mission experience you will be having, it may be recommended you arrive early to spend a few weeks at a language school in that country. Usually this option is better suited for long-term mission experiences.

  • Find a private tutor- ask your friends and family if they know anyone who is willing to tutor or even call your local college or university’s language department to see if a student is willing to do so.
  • Look for a local community center or organization that facilitates a bilingual exchange program.
  • Practice, Practice, Practice! The best way to keep what you have learned fresh in your mind is to stay immersed in the learning process. Download music in that language, talk with friends in the language you are learning, try to read newspapers online, and watch programs on television if possible.
