Archbishop Responds to Supreme Court Ruling in Hobby Lobby Case
MILWAUKEE - The Court ruled that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) “preventive services” mandate violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) as applied to these employers to the extent that it would have forced them to provide insurance coverage for drugs and devices that violate their religious convictions on respect for human life.
"Today's Supreme Court ruling reflects the fundamental significance of religious liberty, which our Founding Fathers enshrined in the First Amendment," explained Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki. "It has long been the firm belief of the Catholic Church that the universal human right to religious liberty, including freedom of conscience, is the first and most fundamental human right, without which no free and just society can long endure.
"Today, I am pleased that our Supreme Court Justices upheld this fundamental human right, which is a central theme in our proud national narrative."
