Early Childhood Paraprofessional

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide consistent one-on-one support to Early Childhood students demonstrating need  throughout the school day.

  • Maintain a safe, respectful environment for students and peers.

  • Assist students in following classroom routines, transitions and expectations.

  • Implement academic and behavior strategies as directed by the classroom teachers and interventionist.

  • Support the development of positive social skills, emotional regulation and age-appropriate independence.

  • Redirect behavior using calm, respectful and developmentally appropriate strategies.

  • Assist students with academic tasks under the direction of the classroom teacher.

  • Communicate regularly with the classroom teachers and interventionist regarding student progress and concerns.

  • Document behavioral observations and interventions as required.

  • Support participation in school activities, including prayer, liturgy, recess, lunch and specials.

  • Uphold and model Catholic values, respect and compassion in all interactions.

  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

KEY SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma - Associate degree or coursework in special education, child development, or related field is an asset.

  • Experience working with young children, particularly those with special needs, is desired.

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about early childhood development and behavior support strategies.

  • Ability to remain calm, patient and supportive during challenging behaviors.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, staff and families.

  • Consistent, reliable and professional demeanor.

  • Strong observation and communication skills in both oral and written formats.

 

POSITION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Pre-employment completion of Safe Environment Training and background check with renewal every five years.

  • Adhere to the Code of Ethics and Mandatory Reporting Responsibilities.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to actively supervise a young child, including standing, walking, and crouching.

  • Ability to respond quickly to ensure student safety.

  • Respect for and commitment to the mission and values of St. Joseph Parish School

  • Scheduled hours aligned within the school day and following the calendar of St. Joseph Parish School.
