The work of the Open Door Café Porter involves both important physical tasks as well as relationship building at The Open Door Café and the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. The applicant must be creative, responsible, committed and dedicated. He/she must serve as a role model to our guests by displaying positive behavior and values. The duties may be physically demanding and the Porter must show a high level of energy and enthusiasm towards the work. Teamwork is also important as team members often have different responsibilities assigned to them and must coordinate among themselves and multitask. The Porter is supervised by the director of social justice and outreach and the rector/pastor.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Open Door Café (20 hours/week)
- Collaborates with The Open Door Café manager to prepare the lunchroom for the meal distribution
- Helps setup cafe steam tables, plastic ware, napkins, condiments, desserts, bread, beverages, tables and chairs
- Assists with unloading weekly deliveries
- Checks inside and outside of the café for damage, litter, and/or safety concerns to promote a comfortable and safe environment for all guests
- Maintains cleanliness/safety of Open Door Café and restroom areas including light cleaning and trash removal duties
- Is present in the dining room during meal service (11:15am-1:00pm)
- Assists with the Friday Hospitality Center (8:00am-10:30am)
- Communicates with local authorities in situations of a health or safety concern
- Helps to ensure the safety of all guests
- Maintains open communication with the ODC staff, director of social justice and outreach, and the director of maintenance
- Other duties as assigned

Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to move, bend, twist, and climb stairs
Able to work Sundays

Experience in volunteering locally and/or internationally
Excellent organizational and team coordination abilities

Applicant must successfully complete Safe Environment Certification requirements, including a background check.
