Part Time Retail Gift Shop Associate

  • The Basilica gift shop is normally open from 10 am to 3 pm 7 days a week, except major holidays. On some occasions additional hours may be needed.
  • Gift shop employees perform some or all of the following duties:
    • Arrive before opening for set up, and open the store promptly at the correct time according to the day.
    • Allow visitors entry using the security system, using discretion to visitors requesting entry.
    • Greet and welcome visitors and customers, answer their questions, and assist them when selecting and finding merchandise.
    • Assist customers as needed in touring and visiting the Basilica, including regular and audio tours, directions, services, and any limitations they need to be aware of. 
    • Assist, as needed to properly display all store products and place them in an organized manner so that customers can find them easily.
    • Perform the checkout process and conduct all transactions and duties related to billing and payment at the store counter using the Square system. Training will be provided to learn Square, and it is expected that this system will be learned to facilitate gift shop processes and sales.
    • Gain the ability and knowledge to answer customer questions related to information, including availability of products. 
    • Maintain the overall look of the store and ensure that it is clean, restocked, and properly organized.
    • Alert gift shop manager of any low stock or no stock items where ordering is required, or products being requested by customers that we do not carry but could carry. 
    • Be involved in planning and preparation of displays, windows, gift bags and seasonal promotions as needed and requested. 
    • Close the gift shop on time and adjust lighting, utilities at close. 
    • Handle cash and reconcile each day – store sales, receipts, donation box outside the gift shop. 
    • Answer phone calls, e-mails regarding gift shop operations and Basilica visits and tours. 
    • Other gift shop or tour duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Retail experience is beneficial but not required.
  • Good customer service skills, welcoming and helpful.
  • Knowledge of gift shop products, and items related to the Catholic Church is beneficial.
  • Flexibility in working schedule, and ability to assist or substitute in times of need.
  • Prompt attention to working hours to ensure store opens and closes on time.
