School Counselor - CLOSED

  • Support the implementation of school counseling curriculum and other curricula designed to promote emotional development of students.

  • Teach guidance classes in grades K3-8 related to social emotional development, as well as, counsel individual and small groups.

  • Refer students and families to outside mental health agencies and resources as needed.

  • Be a visible member of the student, parent and faculty community, actively participating in the life of the school to become aware of issues general to the student body or specific to individual students who could benefit from counseling resources.

  • Create learning support plans for students with mental health or behavioral concerns in collaboration with classroom teachers.

  • Provide support for parents regarding the mental health and well-being of their children.

  • Collaborate effectively with all teachers, aides and support staff school and parish wide.

  • Keep the principal leadership team informed of sensitive and escalated issues, meetings and conversations with members of the school community.

  • Collaborate with faculty and administration to plan, implement and assess student learning.

  • Maintain confidential student records in compliance with school policy, state and federal regulations.

  • Perform duties as requested.

Qualifications

School Counselor Qualifications or Skills

 

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with administration, faculty, staff, parents and students in a way which is warm, knowledgeable and professional.

  • Desire and ability to work with students at all grade levels and varied ability levels.

  • Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet varied deadlines and communicate effectively with all stakeholders, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive.

  • Working familiarity with student assessment tools and the ability to interpret standardized test results.

  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and minimal direct supervision.

  • Desire to participate in ongoing professional development.

 

Education, Experience and License Requirements

 

  • Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction School Counseling License (If not certified, candidate must have educational plan, approved by and on file with the administration, outlining the steps toward certification with a target completion date.)

  • Understanding of the ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards and Competencies

  • Knowledge of resources to ensure academic, social/emotional and career development of each student.

  • Experience using Responsive Classroom and/or other research-based SEL Programs.

  • Participate and meet requirements of Sustaining the Mission.

  • Complete Safe Environment Training prior to beginning employment and renewal training every five years.

  • Submit a criminal background check every five years.

  • Read and sign The Code of Ethical Standards and Mandatory Reporting Responsibilities.

  • Position requires ability to stand, walk, bend over/crouch and sit for extended periods of time. Ability to use hands, speak and hear.
