JOB SUMMARY: The School Nurse oversees the school’s efforts to provide care for ill or injured students, health and wellness education and training to staff members, parents, and students, expertise to ensure school health policies and practices are aligned with best practice, and to comply with all state and local health requirements. All the activities of the school nurse should align with Cristo Rey’s Catholic and Jesuit mission.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Assists the school leadership in the formation and updating of health policies and procedures, including execution of health-related protocols and responding to health emergencies.
2. Uses existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students.
i. Provides for screening, referral, and follow-up action for student health concerns.
ii. As needed, maintains, evaluates, and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students. Helps to maintain student health records according to professional nursing standards.
iii. Collaborates with parents, school personnel and community health resources for intervention, remediation, and follow through.
iv. Develops, implements and evaluates a plan of care or action for specific students to achieve expected outcomes, including a plan for administration of medication when needed,
v. Interprets the student’s health status and plan of care for school personnel and plans for confidential communication and documentation of student health information, as needed.
3. Plans and helps to implement school health management protocols for students with chronic health problems, including developing an Individual Health Plan (IHP), as needed.
4. Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, health screenings, surveillance and reporting of contagious disease.
5. When appropriate, provides health information to students and their families, and their medical provider as permitted, so that they are equipped to make health decisions.
6. Assist the Athletic Director and Finance/Operations Department in the planning, implementation, and record keeping of student and staff injury reports and protocols.
7. Collaborate with CWSP to ensure health practices and policies are applied to student deployment and work with corporate partners.
8. Serves as a resource person to the classroom teacher and administrator in health instruction and training, when needed.
9. Leads committee to develop, revise, communicate, and execute the school’s Wellness Plan to students, families, and staff members.
