Archbishop Listecki Welcomes Motu Proprio Decree
Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki welcomes the May 9, 2019 decree by Pope Francis to address further the issue of clergy sexual abuse. He said, “This step is one more move forward in the Church’s response to this scandal.” The new norms generally mirror many of those in effect in the U.S. since 2002. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee policies similarly address the areas for action found in the papal document. Archbishop Listecki further noted, “The importance of holding bishops accountable for their actions, or in some instances, inaction, is a key element in these new norms. Many bishops across the country, including the bishops of the State of Wisconsin, were already working on addressing this concern. These norms will assist us in implementing systems to ensure that accountability is in place at every level. Once again I commend and thank survivors of clergy sexual abuse whose brave voices were a significant contribution to moving this issue forward.”
