Position Summary:

The Director of Faith Formation is responsible for the planning, coordination, and leadership of the parish’s faith formation ministries, including children’s religious education, youth ministry, sacramental preparation, and adult faith formation. This role supports the lifelong formation of parishioners and ensures all programs are faithful to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and compliant with diocesan policies.  The Director of Faith Formation will also be responsible for keeping families engaged in the parish immediately after baptism and/or confirmation.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Children’s Religious Education & Sacramental Preparation

  • Develop, implement, and oversee parish religious education programs for:
    • Preschool, elementary school, middle school, and high school students.
  • Coordinate sacramental preparation programs for:
    • First Reconciliation
    • First Eucharist
    • Confirmation (as applicable)
  • Ensure compliance with diocesan curriculum guidelines and policies
  • Maintain accurate enrollment, attendance, and sacramental records
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding expectations and progress

Middle School & High School Discipleship Development

  • Organize youth events, retreats, service projects, and mission opportunities
  • Encourage youth participation in parish liturgical life and service
  • Recruit, train, and support adult volunteers for youth ministry
  • Collaborate with diocesan youth ministry initiatives and events

Adult Faith Formation

  • Lead a parish OCIA program, and encourage participation
  • Develop and coordinate adult faith formation opportunities, such as Bible studies or faith-sharing groups
  • Support lifelong faith formation and parish evangelization efforts
  • Collaborate with parish ministries to integrate formation opportunities

Volunteer Recruitment and Supervision

  • Recruit, train, and supervise catechists, youth ministers, and adult ministry volunteers
  • Provide ongoing formation and support for volunteers
  • Schedule meetings, trainings, and formation sessions
  • Foster a collaborative, faith-filled ministry environment

Safe Environment & Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with diocesan Safe Environment requirements
  • Verify background checks and training completion for staff and volunteers
  • Maintain confidential and accurate compliance records
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and respect

Administration & Communication

  • Prepare and manage budgets for faith formation programs in collaboration with parish leadership
  • Order and manage catechetical and ministry materials
  • Develop calendars, schedules, and communications for programs
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with parishioners, staff, volunteers, and diocesan offices
  • Maintain accurate records and reports as required

Collaboration & Parish Life

  • Collaborate closely with the Pastor, parish staff, school staff, and ministry leaders
  • Participate in parish staff meetings and planning
  • Support parish liturgies, events, and initiatives as needed
  • Contribute to the overall mission and pastoral life of the parish

 

Qualifications:

 

Education and Formation

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church
  • Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Religious Education, Pastoral Ministry, or related field preferred
  • Diocesan catechetical certification (or willingness to obtain)

Desired Optional Experience

  • Experience in parish religious education, youth ministry, or faith formation
  • Experience coordinating volunteers
  • Familiarity with Catholic catechetical resources and youth ministry practices

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, volunteers, and families
  • Ability to manage multiple ministry areas effectively
  • Pastoral sensitivity and a heart for evangelization
  • Basic proficiency with office and communication technology

Working Conditions:

  • Regular four-day workweek (morning to afternoon) and weekend hours
  • Possible overnight retreats or off-site events
  • Flexible schedule to meet ministry needs

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move throughout parish facilities
  • Ability to lift and carry materials (up to approximately 25 pounds)
