Grateful and blessed

We, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another. (Romans 12:5)

Hello Everyone –

Tempus fugit — Time flies — or so the saying goes. One year ago today, I stood before the media and selected guests while being introduced as the 12th Archbishop of Milwaukee.

At that time, I made some comments which I believe bear repeating one year later. In part, I said:

I am deeply grateful to the Holy Father (Pope Francis) for his trust in appointing me as Archbishop of Milwaukee. I will do everything in my power to serve with a faith-filled heart.

As I said in my initial statement upon learning of this appointment, I am truly thrilled to return to my native Wisconsin. It is a great privilege and blessing for me personally.

But with that said, I also realize that many years have passed since I left the Dairy State, and we know that nothing remains the same for very long. No doubt even in the life of the church here in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee new developments have occurred on a regular basis. Therefore, I look forward to listening intently and actively learning more about this local church that is known for its rich history and legacy.

With true excitement, I come to you as the next archbishop on the heels of the Synod on Synodality and with the Jubilee Year not far off on the horizon with its own call for all of us to be agents of hope on our pilgrim way.

The Church is living in a historic moment. The Holy Father is calling us, as the final document on the synod observes, “to pursue a path of spiritual renewal and structural reform to make the Church more participatory and missionary, more capable of walking with every woman and man radiating the light of Christ.”

In many ways, this local church has already begun to take up that path under the leadership of Archbishop Listecki, whom I greatly admire. And know that I look forward to walking together with you, the clergy, consecrated religious, lay women and men. I am anxious to meet you.

As I reflect back on the past year, it has truly been for me a time of grace and challenge — a time of hope and visioning for the future. And while I still feel at times that I am drinking from the proverbial firehose, you have blessed my life — and that of my mother — by your warm welcome, support, and regular assurance of prayers. I am deeply grateful.

And in case you were not aware, last evening (November 3) I celebrated Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist to commemorate the bestowal of the pallium on me by Pope Leo XIV on June 29 at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

I used the following words to conclude the homily:

Therefore, I renew now the oath I made to Pope Leo XIV on June 29th of this year before receiving the pallium:

I, Jeffrey Scott Grob, Archbishop of Milwaukee, will always be faithful and obedient to Blessed Peter the Apostle, to the Holy Apostolic Church of Rome, and to you, the Supreme Pontiff, and to your legitimate Successors. So help me Almighty God.

Amen

I am blessed to serve as Archbishop of Milwaukee.

As I do for you, please pray for me,

Most Reverend Jeffrey S. Grob
Archbishop of Milwaukee
