Recommended resources from Fr. John

Books:

  • Forgiveness is a Choice - Dr. Robert Enright. Excellent general resource for priests and for pastoral ministry, with journalling exercises as the focal point.
  • The Forgiving Life - Dr. Robert Enright. A more dialogue-based approach to the topic, with appendices that offer some additional implementation strategies.
  • Be Healed - Dr. Bob Schuchts. A study of emotional and spiritual healing that complements Enright’s work on forgiveness.
  • Passion and Virtue - Servais Pinckaers. A wonderful and succinct study of the relationship between the emotions and the virtues; helps situate the concepts we discussed within the moral tradition of the Church.

Other Media:

  • Healing Through Forgiveness: Here’s a talk I co-presented on the topic of forgiveness, which includes a long healing and forgiveness exercise at the end. It can be helpful to share this with people who need to work through these matters on their own time, and it also provides a format for guiding someone else through forgiveness prayer.
  • The Place We Find Ourselves is an excellent podcast by a Christian therapist on healing. Some of the principles need to be adapted to a Catholic theological framework but many of his insights are very profound.
