Position Summary

The Associate Director of Christian Formation supports the mission of St. John Vianney Parish by leading faith formation programming for children in grades K–5. This position carries primary responsibility for Second Grade sacramental preparation in Reconciliation and First Communion, as well as oversight and revitalization of the Little Disciples program for children in kindergarten and first grade. The Associate Director works under the direct supervision of the Director of Christian Formation and in close collaboration with the broader parish staff and clergy team, ensuring that all programs are faithful to the teachings of the Church and integrated into the sacramental and liturgical life of the parish.

Qualifications

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing with a solid knowledge of and fidelity to the teachings of the Church.
  • Degree in theology, religious education, pastoral ministry, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with sacramental preparation programs at the elementary level strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and relational skills, particularly with young children and their families.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, volunteers, and parents.

Primary Responsibilities

Sacramental Preparation (Grade 2)

  • Lead all aspects of Second Grade sacramental preparation, including the Rite of Reconciliation and First Communion.
  • Coordinate schedules, liturgical elements, and family communication for sacramental celebrations in collaboration with the clergy and liturgy team.
  • Select and implement doctrinally sound curriculum for sacramental preparation, subject to approval by the Director.
  • Recruit, train, and support catechists and volunteers for Second Grade sacramental preparation.

K–5 Faith Formation

  • Oversee and coordinate faith formation programming for grades K–5, including curriculum selection, scheduling, and catechist support.
  • Ensure doctrinal fidelity and catechetical quality across all K–5 programs in accord with archdiocesan guidelines.
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding program schedules, expectations, and formation resources.

General Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Director of Christian Formation on program planning, budget management, and staff coordination.
  • Maintain appropriate records related to formation programs and Safe Environment requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with all archdiocesan Safe Environment policies, including verification of catechist certifications and background checks.
  • Participate in parish staff meetings and formation-related events as needed.

ADA Physical Requirements

  • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods; use hands; reach with hands and arms.
  • Close vision required for paperwork and computer.
  • Able to utilize computer keyboard, monitor, and telephone.
  • This role functions in an office and classroom environment and uses standard office and educational equipment.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds.

Nature of Supervision Received

The Associate Director of Christian Formation receives moderate supervision from the Director of Christian Formation. The Associate Director is expected to manage day-to-day K–5 programming with appropriate initiative and professional judgment. Regular check-ins with the Director ensure alignment with parish formation goals, and matters involving significant budget expenditures, curriculum changes, or pastoral sensitivity are escalated to the Director for review and approval.

Judgment Exercised / Decisions Made

The Associate Director is expected to take initiative and make decisions in accordance with the mission and vision of the parish and the direction of the Director of Christian Formation. Areas of independent judgment include day-to-day program scheduling, catechist coordination, and family communication. The Associate Director assists in managing program budgets under the oversight of the Director. Decisions involving significant expenditures, personnel matters, or doctrinal questions are referred to the Director.

Number of Employees Supervised

This position does not directly supervise parish employees. The Associate Director coordinates and supports formation volunteers and catechists in the K–5 and Little Disciples programs.
