Position Summary

The Director of Christian Formation supports the mission of St. John Vianney Parish by coordinating and overseeing the parish’s faith formation programs for children, youth, and adults, with particular emphasis on grades 6–12 and Confirmation preparation. The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the principal pastoral responsibility of the clergy team, and formation for grades K–5 (including First Communion preparation) is overseen by the Associate Director of Christian Formation. The Director works in close collaboration with the Pastor and clergy team to ensure that all formation efforts are faithful to the teachings of the Church and integrated into the sacramental and liturgical life of the parish.

Qualifications

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing with a solid knowledge of and fidelity to the teachings of the Church.
  • Degree in theology, religious education, pastoral ministry, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • 3–5 years’ experience in parish faith formation or catechetical ministry.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, and volunteers.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary staff leader for faith formation for grades 6–12, with particular focus on Confirmation preparation, curriculum, scheduling, and catechist support.
  • Coordinate and support the parish OCIA process in collaboration with the clergy team.
  • Provide oversight and coordination support to the Associate Director of Christian Formation, who leads K–5 programming including First Communion preparation.
  • Coordinate adult faith formation opportunities in collaboration with the clergy.
  • Recruit, train, and support catechists and formation volunteers in accord with diocesan and parish policies.
  • Ensure doctrinal fidelity, catechetical quality, and compliance with archdiocesan guidelines across all formation programs.
  • Collaborate with parish staff and clergy to integrate faith formation into the broader life of the parish.
  • Work with the chair of the Formation Committee to align parish outreach initiatives with committee priorities, supporting their work and facilitating staff interaction as needed.
  • Maintain appropriate records related to formation programs and Safe Environment requirements.
  • Prepare and manage program budgets for faith formation ministries; approve catechist stipends within established parameters, with all expenditures subject to approval by the Pastor.

  • This role functions in an office environment and uses standard office equipment.
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds.

Nature of Supervision Received

The Director of Christian Formation receives moderate supervision from the Pastor. The Director is expected to manage day-to-day formation operations with a high degree of initiative and professional judgment. Regular check-ins with the Pastor ensure alignment with parish priorities, and certain decisions—particularly those involving significant budget expenditures, policy changes, or matters of pastoral sensitivity—are escalated for pastoral review and approval.

Judgment Exercised / Decisions Made

The Director is expected to take initiative and make decisions in accordance with the mission and vision of the parish and the direction of the Pastor. Areas of judgment include program planning and scheduling, catechist selection and training, curriculum choices, and day-to-day operational matters. The Director manages formation program budgets and may approve catechist stipends within established parameters; all expenditures are subject to Pastor approval. Matters involving significant financial commitments, personnel actions, or doctrinal questions are referred to the Pastor.

Supervises 2 employees: the Associate Director of Christian Formation and the Office Coordinator of Christian Formation and Outreach.
